Tablet Weaving Resources

A work in progress – I have many more resources to add…

This is not an exhaustive list of resources, just some of the more useful and interesting that I’ve come across.

BOOKS

Tablets at Work – Claudia Wollny.  This is a terrific book, full of instructions and techniques, all beautifully laid out over 700 pages.  A worthy investment.  Available from www.claudia-wollny-edition.com, and from the Braid Society in the UK (thebraidsociety.wildapricot.org/Books).

Applesies and Fox Noses (Finnish Tabletwoven Bands) – Maikki Karisto & Mervi Pasanen. A lovely book, suitable for beginners.  Available from www.salakirjat.com.

The Techniques of Tablet Weaving – Peter Collingwood.  This was for a long time considered the ‘bible’ of tablet weaving.  Lots of detailed description on the history and techniques of tablet weaving.  A reprint of this book is available from all good bookshops.

Card Weaving – Candace Crockett.  This is the first book I bought on tablet weaving.  Available from all good bookshops.

DVDS & VIDEOS

Claudia Wollny’s  excellent Tablet Weaving Basics on YouTube covers all the basics you need to get started.

For instructions on how best to setup swivels on your inkle loom see the YouTube video from Know Knots.

WEBSITES

Silvia Aisling – aisling.biz – has a wonderful tablet weaving website, with a lot of information about historical patterns and advice on weaving.  Check out Silvia’s blog too – aislingde.blogspot.com – for more.  In German – use Google translate if needed.

Shelagh Lewins – www.shelaghlewins.com.  Shelagh has a lot of historical patterns and information on her website.  She is also the person behind the Twisted Threads online pattern app (see below).

Linda Hendrickson – www.lindahendrickson.com – videos, tutorials and books on tablet weaving and ply-splitting.  On Linda’s website you can find instructions for weaving a double-face alphabet, and a video showing continuous warping.

sagawoolcraft.com is a site by Cecilia the weaver who shares many of her wonderful Sulawesi tablet weaving patterns.

Not tablet weaving but an invaluable resource on backstrap weaving – Laverne Waddington‘s wonderful website has all you need to know about working with a backstrap.

ONLINE PATTERN GENERATORS

There are two very good free-to-use pattern generator sites:

Twisted Threads (twistedthreads.org) and the Tablet Weaving Draft Designer (bazzalisk.org/tabletweave).

Twisted Threads requires a login if you wish to create a pattern, but there are many patterns available that have been created by other users of the site.  The site uses the same notation as Applesies and Fox Noses.

The Tablet Weaving Draft Designer does not require a login and you will need to actively save the work you do on the site.  More information on how to use TWDD can be found on Catherine Weaver’s website www.tabletweavingintheoryandpractice.co.uk.

ORGANISATIONS

TWIST –Tablet Weavers’ International Studies & Techniqueswww.tabletweavers.org – produces 3 magazines a year, and membership gives you access to all back issues online.
